Faculty: Apply for Grants or Fellowships
Applying for grants or fellowships is a vital endeavour for all faculty to fund research or career goals.

To aid in this process, the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research divides such opportunities into these general categories:
Internal funding
- funding from Saint Mary's University, available only to current SMU faculty or SMU graduate students
External funding
- Funding opportunities from other institutions or agencies can be further separated into two broad categories:
- funding from Canadian institutions, available only to Canadian faculty or graduate students
- funding from global institutions, available to non-Canadian faculty or graduate students

Internal Funding Opportunities
The Three Internal Grant Programs available are:
- FGSR Strategic Research Grants
- May request grants between $5,000 - $15,000, which will normally be utilized within 2 years.
- This grant has been suspended for 2024.
- FGSR Small Internal Grants in Aid of Research
- May request grants up to a maximum of $1,500, normally utilized within 1 year.
- Saint Mary's University Accessibility Research Fund
- May request grants between $7,000 - $15,000

External Funding Opportunities
There is a mandatory FGSR Internal Review of all Tri-Council, CFI, and Research Nova Scotia grant applications two weeks before the funding agencies' deadline.
Please inform the RGO of your intent to apply for any Tri-Council program as soon as you are certain of applying, preferably, at least four weeks before the program's deadline.
Additionally, we have a dedicated group of volunteer reviewers, the SMU College of Reviewers, who are happy to provide expert advice on your grant proposal. The reviewers require a minimum of two weeks lead time to review draft applications.

Banting Discovery Award Program The Banting Discovery Foundation is celebrating its 100th anniversary of grant giving in mid-2025. The Discovery Award seed grant program was established in 1925 to support the most talented early-career biomedical health researchers. Their bold, innovative ideas are a vital link in the chain that results in medical discoveries critical for the health and well-being of Canadians. Banting Discovery Awards, valued at $30,000 each, confer prestige and credibility on successful Canadian recipients early in their careers. This is a two-step application process. Applicants must submit a NOI by November 1, 2024 (9 pm ET). Applicants will be notified via email by November 30, 2024, regarding their eligibility. Those who meet the requirements will be invited to complete a full application by January 20, 2025. NOI details can be found here <LINK>. Post-Doctoral External Funding Opportunities
Banting Postdoctoral FellowshipsThe SMU internal deadline has passed. This competition is closed. The 2024-25 competition was launched in April 2024, and the complete application deadline is September 17, 2024 (20:00 EDT). Please note that Saint Mary's University's internal deadline is AUGUST 15, 2024. Eligible individuals who wish to be considered should send a message of interest and their CV to Research Grants Officer Marlene Ramos at rgo@smu.ca. Selection will be based on individual merit, potential for a successful research career, and alignment with Saint Mary's University's strategic priorities. The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program is designed to support world-class postdoctoral researchers. The fellowship provides $70,000 annually for two years (taxable and non-renewable). The program is open to Canadian and international researchers recently completing a PhD, PhD- equivalent, or health professional degree. Applications must be completed in full collaboration with the proposed host institution. Banting Competition Timelines: April to September 2024- Applicants seek endorsement from host institution to apply, prepare and submit application. Vanier Canada Graduate ScholarshipsThis competition is closed. Doctoral Scholarship based on academic excellence, research potential, and leadership. Richard M. Bird Post-Doctoral FellowshipThis opportunity is now closed. Applications must be received by no later than Friday, April 26, 2024. For more information, contact: info.imfg@utoronto.ca The Institute on Municipal Finance and Governance (IMFG) offers a $60,000 Richard M. Bird Post-Doctoral Fellowship to support researchers who have completed their doctoral dissertation in a relevant discipline no more than three years prior to the submission of the fellowship request (i.e. between September 1, 2021 and September 1, 2024). Relevant disciplines could include economics, public finance, economic development, planning, urban studies, geography, sociology, political science, law or another field which draws upon the skills required for the analysis of public policy, especially in the areas of municipal finance and governance. Please note that applicants must have completed all requirements for their Ph.D. before September 1, 2024. The normal hours of work are 40 hours per week for a full-time postdoctoral fellow (pro-rated for those holding a partial appointment) recognizing that the needs of the employee's research and training and the needs of the supervisors' research program may require flexibility in the performance of the employee's duties and hours of work. Fellowship recipients are expected to live in Toronto, Canada, while pursuing their research, and will have the opportunity to participate generally in the intellectual life of the larger University of Toronto community. IMFG is situated within U of T's School of Cities, allowing the recipient to benefit from the broad network associated with the school and its affiliates. |

Fulbright Canada Research Chairs program
Fulbright Canada Research Chairs are intended for Canadian citizens who are exceptional scholars and/or experienced professionals who wish to conduct research and/or lecture in the United States.
Fulbright Canada Research Chairs are pre-arranged affiliations that allow scholars to conduct research/lecture on subjects important to that university. Partner universities are excited to welcome the Fulbright Visiting Chairs into campus life and encourage them to engage with students, faculty, and the broader community. Fulbright Visiting Research Chairs can guest lecture in university courses, mentor students, lecture in public venues, network, and promote their research while representing the Fulbright program, and their home and host institutions.
The award values range from US$25,000 to US$50,000 and from four to nine months. Awards typically begin in either September 2025 or January 2026.

The Royal-Mach-Gaensslen Prize for Mental Health Research
The Royal-Mach-Gaensslen Prize for Mental Health Research is funded by a generous donation from the Mach-Gaensslen Foundation, building upon the wishes of its founders, Mr. Vaclav Mach and Dr. Hanni Gaensslen, to support mental health research.
Each year for ten years, $100,000 will be available to be awarded to one person (or a research team of up to three persons) per competition. The Prize is awarded with the expectation that the recipient(s) will continue to demonstrate excellence in their field of work. If no appropriate candidate is found, the Prize will be deferred for one year.
Eligible candidates are exceptional rising star researchers who are 45 years of age or younger at the application date, are Canadian citizens or have landed immigrant status in Canada, and are currently residing in Canada or are residing abroad but are committed to return to Canada within six months from the date of being awarded the Prize. In addition, candidates must be affiliated with a Canadian academic or clinical institution and their research shall be in a mental health discipline.
