With September just around the corner, we wanted to remind you of some important dates and upcoming events. We also wanted to provide some additional information on your first-year science courses.    

If you haven’t already, be sure to RSVP for our Science Academic Welcome Session on Tuesday, September 3th! You won’t want to miss out on this event.  

First-Year FAQ Sheets:   

Check out our First-Year FAQ Sheets for some of the core sciences courses you may be taking in September! Please keep in mind this is not a complete list of our first-year courses, nor are you likely registered in all of these courses. You will receive a full course syllabus for each course you are enrolled in during the first lecture.  

Important Dates:                    

• Tuesday, September 3: Science Academic Welcome.  
• Wednesday, September 4: First Day of Classes. 
• Friday, September 13: Last day to add, drop or change fall term courses.   

Did you know there are events happening before you start at SMU and during your first few weeks? These events are a fantastic way to help you get to know campus and meet new people. You can see all upcoming events on our New to SMU Events & Activities page.

We are getting closer to the start of your time at Saint Mary’s!  Please mark your calendar and save the date for our Faculty of Science and Engineering Academic Welcome on Tuesday, September 3^rd.  More information about RSVPing for this event coming soon!      

What can you do now and during the summer months to get prepared to start in the Faculty of Science at SMU?   Have you.... 

• Connected with your Peer Success Coach, Carlos or Mikayla? The Peer Success Coaching Program provides coaches to each new student for their first year at SMU. Peer Success Coaches are upper-year students who offer a student perspective with the students they coach, informing them on adjusting to university life and academics, accessing campus resources, problem-solving and goal setting, and getting involved on campus.
• Explored our “New to SMU-Online' mini modules in Brightspace? These online 'mini modules' cover important topics to help you prepare for university. You will find you are already enrolled in the course in your Brightspace, just click on the course to get started! Don't see the course? Email Carlos or Mikayla with your A number and let them know!
• Considered JumpStart! ? JumpStart is a series of academic works, webinars and digital resources that provide students an introduction to academic expectations at university. Watch online modules through JumpStart on Demand or join us in-person with JumpStart Live August 19th-21st. Register Now!

There are many things to get excited about this month. Maybe you are graduating from high school, or starting a new summer job, along with getting one step closer to the beginning of your time at Saint Mary’s!  

You may be starting to think ahead of the things you may need to do before starting with us in September, so we wanted to help by providing a few ideas to help you prepare.     

• Take a look at our New Student Checklist to help prepare for university.  

• Check out our New Student Resources   page where you can find information about a wide range of services and resources available to you. 

• Sign up for the Science Advising Brightspace page and subscribe to email notifications. To sign-up, go to the SMU Brightspace Homepage, sign-in, and on the NavBar click Discover. Search for Science Advising Centre, select it and enroll. You can manage your notifications when signed-in by clicking on your name in the upper right and select Notifications from the drop-down menu. You’ll be using Brightspace throughout your degree to connect with your instructor and their course content. More information about Brightspace and other student software support can be found here.  

Don’t forget, we are here to support you throughout the Summer to ensure you are ready for September. You can make an appointment to meet with us in-person or virtually through our online booking system. We are also happy to answer questions by email.

Welcome to Saint Mary's Faculty of Science!     

Your new journey is about to begin and it’s time to get excited about your future in the Faculty of Science!  As Academic Advisors, we are here to support you every step of the way. Over the coming months we will be sharing various tips and resources to help you prepare for the start of classes in September.    

If you haven’t completed your registered or unsure if you have chosen the right courses, meet with Us!  
If you’d like to meet with an academic advisor, you can book through our online system: www.smu.ca/scienceadvising. You can book an in-person or virtual appointment. We are also happy to answer questions via email.   

We recommend that you visit an Academic Advisor at least once per term to ensure that you’re on track to meet your education goals. To help you start on the right track, we have provided a few useful resources below.
