Scholarships and Awards

Scholarships and Awards

Each year, the Department awards the William J. Dalton Scholarship to deserving students in the field of political science. The value of the scholarship varies according to resources and the number of successful applicants. Applicants must have good academic standing and a declared major in Political Science. Candidates can apply by submitting an application form through the Financial Aid Office (please confirm receipt with Dr. Doucet in September, before the deadline), or by submitting the application form directly to the Chair of the Department. Successful applicants will receive a notice of their award early in the fall semester.

Dalton Scholarship Application Form 2024

Two other prestigious scholarships are open to full-time undergraduate students majoring in Political Science. The Edmund Morris Memorial Scholarship is awarded on the basis of superior academic achievement and demonstrated leadership in community activities. The Patrick Power Scholarship in Memory of Terence R.B. Donahoe is awarded on the basis of academic excellence, evidence of financial need, and residence (i.e., a permanent address) in the Halifax Regional Municipality. These scholarships are not awarded by the Department. Application for these and many other scholarships can be made by filling out the application for Named Undergraduate Scholarships.

For a graduating student majoring in Political Science (or History, English or Philosophy) who has been accepted for entry into the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University, or University of New Brunswick Law School, you will be considered for the Mary Ann and Edward J McBride Law Prize, award monies to aid you in your first year of law school. The Prize is determined by the Registrar's Office in consultation with the Senate Scholarship Committee.

Please visit the Scholarships & Awards page for details on these and other available scholarships and bursaries. Note that the Department is not responsible for the distribution of the awards. If you are having problems, please contact Financial Aid & Awards at financial.aid@smu.ca.

We also encourage students to submit essays to the Writing Centre and Academic Communications to apply for the Writing Awards.
