Dr. Power is an alumnus of Saint Mary's and has both a BComm (Honors) and an MBA from the 'Home of the Huskies'. He has been a full-time member of the Accounting faculty since September 1995. Prof. Power's doctoral work was completed at Purdue University after which he joined the Accounting department in the School of Business Administration at the University of Rhode Island. Prior to embarking on the Ph.D. program at Purdue, he also taught corporate finance, small business management, and business policy, as well as several accounting courses at the University of Prince Edward Island. Professor Power’s major work experience outside of teaching has included full time consulting work for the federal government in the area of cost analysis and long-range planning as well as financial credit analysis for a major Canadian investment firm. Private consulting experience includes work for construction, retail, farmers' market, not-for-profit, and public utility organizations. Volunteer experience has included various roles in university governance and faculty unions, Canadian and American accounting associations, and several not-for-profit organizations.
Professor Power’s research interests focus primarily on three areas: the ethical and motivational aspects of managerial manipulation of accounting income; the theory and practice of activity-based management; and accounting education and student motivation. Professor Power is also involved in accounting case research and has written several teaching cases.
