Dr. Hong Fan’s research explores firms’ opportunistic behavior and the influence of macro-level institutions on micro-level corporate decisions. Her work examines how firms strategically respond to external forces such as government incentives, political connections, and institutional constraints, particularly in the areas of taxation, financial reporting, and ESG performance. Using empirical data from China and Canada, Dr. Fan analyzes the effects of public policies—such as wage subsidies and government-guided funds—on corporate actions, revealing both intended outcomes and unintended consequences. A central theme in her research is the interplay between policy design and firm strategy, shedding light on how organizations navigate complex regulatory and economic environments. By linking macroeconomic context with firm-level behavior, her work advances understanding of corporate accountability, sustainable finance, and the effectiveness of government interventions.
